imPROVE Breast Cancer Care: Clinician-Led, Data-Driven, & Patient-Focused
Client
The imPROVE Breast Cancer Care initiative is the culmination of a close collaboration between the PROVE Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and Clinovera, with supportive contributions from members of Harvard Business School (HBS) and the International Consortium of Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM).
Project Overview
Backed by U.S. government funding, imPROVE features a patient-facing web application with separate clinician and administrative portals, all designed through iterative feedback from key stakeholders. The initiative aims to significantly improve breast cancer care by utilizing Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) and amplifying patient voices in research and practice.
Solution
imPROVE platform is now being implemented across the Breast Oncology and Plastic Surgery Services at BWH and DFCI. It includes the following user-facing components:
- A patient-facing web application: patients submit PROMs, enhancing self-management and engagement
- Clinician and administrative portals: i providers and managers can access their workflow with real-time dashboards, which facilitate cross-platform integration (e.g., EHRs), provider efficiency, and data visibility
The solution includes a comprehensive back-end and middleware that facilitates interaction between its components, bidirectional integration with Epic EHR, notifications and in-basket messaging for providers, patient data storage and retrieval, audit trail, error handling, and a number of other elements.
The platform and its components are designed through iterative feedback from key stakeholders.
Highlights of the Platform
- Multi-Clinic Architecture: Tailored deployment for individual clinics without duplicating development, optimizing cost-to-value ratio.
- Multilingual Capability: Supports broader patient demographics by offering both English and Spanish language options, enhancing inclusivity and expanding the addressable market.
- Long-Term Research Horizon: A 10-year vision attracts sustained funding, establishes brand trust, and patient stratification.
